The Tucson Festival of Books is an annual two-day event in March that exists to improve literacy rates among children and adults. This year, the Department of Physiology hosted a table that presented as part of the Science City section of the festival.

As part of the event, the Department of Physiology held demonstrations and educational activities on topics that include:

  • How lungs work and how smoking and lung obstructions like asthma change that function
  • Anatomy of the eye and how light images are flipped inside the eye
  • Body part scavenger hunt and putting the torso back together
  • Research both in the physiology department and from the National Institutes of Health
  • Optical illusions
  • Physiology trivia and coloring pages
  • Information on pregnancy and pregnancy studies

Throughout the weekend, the Physiology table saw more than 700 visitors and gave away over 1,000 fun physiology stickers to event attendees. The Physiology Department thanks the 23 volunteers, made up of faculty and graduate and undergraduate students, who helped during the event.

The Festival of Books began in 2009, featuring 450 authors and presenters while welcoming 50,000 visitors. In the 15 years since its founding, it is now one of the largest book festivals in the United States. Learn more about the Tucson Festival of Books.
